St Thomas Soccer Club has been a proud partner of the Respect in Sport Parent Program to our Club since 2018. This is mandatory for all Parents of players in our Youth Competitive Program.
Over the last few years, this program has become a requirement in many sport organizations across Canada. To date, about 400,000 sport parents are certified in the Respect in Sport – Parent Program. Some of you will have already taken the program if you have children playing hockey. Ontario Soccer which we are a part of, is quickly moving towards this program provincially, and we are taking a leadership role by getting out in front of the issues.
This program is aimed at helping good parents become better sport parents, by providing information and tools to help us better support our kids in sport. It is a fact that 7 out of 10 adolescents in Canada, leaves youth sport. For every adolescent boy that leaves sports, 6 girls will leave. This program helps to keep youth sports fun and safe for all, so kids will hopefully continue on in sports, well into adulthood.
The Respect in Sport Parent Program is a one-hour online program. It is internet-based, so it can be done anywhere, anytime. There is an APP available, so it can be downloaded to your mobile device. You do not have to complete the program in one sitting, you can come and go from the program and it remembers where you left off.
Our requirement will be that one parent/guardian per athlete complete this program. While the requirement is for one parent or guardian per athlete, we strongly urge you to sit down as a family around the computer, including your kids and complete the program together. If that is not possible, then we encourage whoever registers for the program, to share their username and password with their spouse/partner, or whoever else in the family regularly attends games, so as many members of your family as possible have the benefit of the information this program provides.
As previously mentioned, if you have already taken the program, you do not have to repeat it, however, we will be asking you to “Import” your Respect in Sport – Parent Program certification, into our database, so we may track which parents have completed the program.
More information will be provided shortly on how to register for and complete the Respect in Sport Parent Program.
